Karen Eide is a mixed-media illustrator and painter whose work centers on animals, wildlife, and the
quiet poetry of the natural world. She maintains a studio at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville,
VA where she both paints and teaches.
For more than 20 years, she has worked in the ancient art of encaustic painting, a medium dating back
to the 5th century BCE. Encaustic involves melting pigmented beeswax on a heated surface and
applying it to rigid panels with brushes, producing luminous, layered works with a distinct, often
ethereal quality. The medium is remarkably versatile and can be used as a stand-alone medium or as a
complement to oil painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, watercolor, and other disciplines.
Since 2005, she has been teaching her Encaustic Painting and Mixed Media Lab workshop for the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, independently, and other art centers and schools
throughout Virginia.
